Dr Samir Uprety is a clinical research scientist with specific expertise in clinical optometry, ophthalmology, and clinical investigations of the anterior eye.
Dr Uprety graduated with a Bachelor of Optometry and Vision Science in 2013 from Nepal, and a Doctor of Optometry in 2015 from the Philippines. He then worked at Nepal’s first eye hospital, Nepal Eye Hospital, and in private optometry practice as a lead optometrist. He completed his PhD at QUT in 2023 under the supervision of Prof Andrew Zele, where he developed expertise in electrophysiology and visual psychophysics techniques. His research explored interactions between melanopsin, rod, and cone photoreceptors in the human visual pathway, work recognized with QUT’s Faculty of Health Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award. He then served as a Research Associate and Sessional Academic at QUT’s Centre for Eye and Vision Research, leading industry-funded clinical studies and tutoring optometry students in optics, visual science, clinical optometry, and research.
In 2023, he joined the Vision for Life Institute as a Clinical Research Scientist under the supervision of Dr Cameron McLintock, where he leads several research projects focusing on anterior segment research. His current research includes intraocular lenses for cataract surgery, ocular biometry, ocular surface disorders, and anterior segment imaging, with a focus on improving visual and refractive outcomes for patients. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, presented at national and international conferences, and supervised medical students and fellows across several Australian universities. He welcomes enquiries from prospective students interested in ophthalmology and vision science research and remains committed to mentoring emerging researchers and translating scientific discovery into better patient care.
