What is strabismus?
Strabismus or “squint” occurs when the eyes are not correctly aligned.
Rather than both eyes looking straight, one eye is deviated inward (esotropia), outward (exotropia), upwards (hypertropia) or downards (hypotropia).
Strabismus often starts in childhood but can also develop in adulthood. If it develops in adulthood it can cause double vision or “diplopia”.
Studies have found that strabismus can significantly affect a person’s self-esteem as well as their their opportunities at work and in personal relationships.

What do I experience during strabismus surgery?
Strabismus surgery is performed under a full anaesthetic (general anaesthetic) and you are not at all aware of the surgery being performed. After surgery the eye/s can feel a little irritated but significant pain is very rare.
